What are fascia and soffit, and why do they fail?
The fascia is the board along the roof edge that gutters are fastened to. The soffit is the underside of the roof overhang between the fascia and the wall. When gutters leak, overflow behind the trough, or hold water against the house, the fascia soaks up moisture and rots, and water can spread into the soffit and roof deck. Fascia and soffit repair replaces the damaged wood so the gutters have a solid base again.
Fascia and soffit problems
Rotten fascia boards
Wood fascia rots where water sits against it: behind leaking corners, under overflowing gutters and where the roof edge lacks a drip edge. Signs include peeling paint, dark stains, soft wood that gives under a screwdriver, and gutter hangers that won't stay tight. Rotted sections are cut out and replaced with new lumber, then primed and painted. Some homeowners choose aluminum fascia wrap or PVC fascia for low maintenance.
Soffit damage behind gutters
Water that gets past the fascia stains and warps soffit panels, loosens trim and can lead to mold on the underside of the overhang. Damaged soffits also give birds, rodents and insects a way into the attic. Repair involves replacing damaged panels or boards and fixing the gutter problem that caused it.
Exposed rafter tails
Some older Spanish-style and Craftsman homes have exposed rafter tails instead of a continuous fascia board. Rot shows up at the rafter ends, and gutters are often hung with strap hangers. Repairs need care to preserve the home's character.
How fascia and gutter problems are connected
Fascia damage is almost always a water problem first. Fixing the wood without fixing the gutters means it will rot again. A complete repair usually includes:
- finding the cause, such as a leaking corner, an overflowing run or a missing drip edge
- removing the gutter section over the damaged area
- replacing rotted fascia and any damaged soffit
- priming and painting all sides of new wood
- rehanging the gutter correctly, or installing new gutters if the old ones were the problem
If the gutters themselves need work, see gutter repair or gutter replacement.
Signs to look for
- Peeling or bubbling paint along the roof edge
- Gutters that tilt, sag or pull away even after rehanging
- Dark streaks or water stains on soffits
- Wood that feels soft or crumbles at the corners
- Signs of birds, rodents or insects entering at the eaves
Fascia repair on Covina-area homes
Covina's sun is tough on fascia paint, and once the finish cracks, the wood underneath is exposed when winter storms arrive. Many local homes are several decades old, and fascia boards that have been painted over many times can hide rot underneath. A gutter replacement is the ideal time to inspect and repair fascia, because the gutters are already off. For how these repairs fit with other local gutter work, see our guide to gutter repair and installation around Covina.
Cost considerations
The cost depends on how many linear feet of fascia need replacing, the material, the height, paint and finishing, and whether gutters must be removed and rehung. Damage is often more extensive than it looks from the ground, so a good estimate notes how hidden rot will be handled. See our gutter installation cost guide for related factors.
